Advisory

I have had many parents inquire about the difference between the "Advisory" class and the "Study Skills" classes in ParentVUE. So, I thought it would be useful to include the answers to those frequently asked questions here!

If you have a question that is not answered below please contact me and I would be happy to answer it!

Advisory vs. Study Skills

1. Are "Advisory" and "Study Skills" different classes?

No, not really. The "Advisory" and "Study Skills" classes are both held during the Advisory time slot on the weekly schedule. To access assignments for both "Advisory" and "Study Skills" students go to the Advisory Google Classroom on their Google Classroom Dashboard.

2. If they are not different classes then why are they separated on ParentVUE?

We were required to separate them because the District mandated that we could not have "Advisory" more than two days a week. However, during remote learning, we thought having an Advisory period every day would help students get ready for their classes and get their days off to a good start. So, that's why the "Study Skills" class was created - to comply with District mandate while still allowing us to meet as an Advisory class every day. So, technically, the class that students attend during the Advisory time slot on Tuesday and Thursdays is "Advisory," and the class that students attend during the Advisory time slot on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays is "Study Skills."

3. So, how does attendance work for "Advisory" and "Study Skills?"

As previously stated, during the Advisory time slot on Tuesdays and Thursdays students attend "Advisory" for the entire 20 minute period. Attendance for "Advisory" is based on their attendance on those two days specifically. During the Advisory time slot on Mondays and Wednesdays students attend "Study Skills" for the first 5 minutes of the class period. I then release them to work on homework or missing assignments for their other classes. Attendance for "Study Skills" is based on their attendance on those three days specifically.

4. So, how do the grades work? What assignments belong to "Advisory" and what assignments belong to "Study Skills?"

Every teacher was given the freedom to decide how to split up the grades for the Advisory time slot between "Advisory" and "Study Skills" on ParentVUE. I chose to divide them as follows:

"Advisory" Assignments:  All weekly grade checks and participatory assignments
                                                      (Wellness BINGO, Team Builders, etc.)

"Study Skills" Assignments:  The daily check-ins

So, if your child's "Advisory" grade is low it's because they haven't done their weekly grade checks or have not participated in the participatory assignments. On the other hand, if your child's "Study Skills" grade is low it's because they haven't done their daily check-ins.
